It’s not all hot springs, Roman baths, abbeys and architecture. Bath is also home to some fantastic restaurants. Don’t believe us? Just check out our run-down of the most scrumptious spots in the city - perfect for inspiration if you’re looking for a delicious dining experience.
Diners have two options when travelling to the Bathwick Boatman. They can either arrive at the riverside restaurant by boat, or by walking through a (mildly less glamorous) car park. But however you get there, this is a dining experience not to be missed. Run by husband-and-wife team Ben and Rosy, The Bathwick Boatman offers affordable and exquisite European cuisine. When weather allows, there are also beautiful views of the river Avon.

Allium Brasserie is one of Bath’s newest and hottest restaurants. Head Chef Chris Staines has a stellar reputation for creating lively and internationally influenced menus that really deliver on flavour. Quality is key at Allium Brasserie and they are focussed on cooking with the freshest seasonal ingredients. Fast becoming one of the best restaurants in Bath, Allium Brasserie don’t create food that is arty or fancy, they just make delicious food that you will love. Whether you fancy a Sunday lunch with a twist or a midweek dinner treat, Allium Brasserie is the place to be for food connoisseurs in Bath.

If great food, a warm atmosphere and a touch of class are what you’re after, look no further than Thai Basil. It doesn’t just serve the best Thai food in Bath, it’s also reasonably priced, dishes starting at £9. The Pla Makaam, a stir-fried fillet of fish with a tasty tamarind sauce comes highly recommended. Delicious!

Indulge us for a second and imagine if Alice in Wonderland had grown up, stepped away from the looking glass and opened a tapas bar. Now you’re close to La Pearla, where the atmosphere is almost as good as the food. Tucked away in the basement of a beautiful three-storey building in central Bath, la Perla features a menu that changes on a daily basis. There’s only one drawback to this award-winning restaurant - it’s so popular that booking is recommended.

Whether you’re a veggie looking for a dining experience that goes beyond replacing the meat option with a hunk of cheese, or in the mood for something different, then the Green Rocket Cafe is the place for you. This award-winning independent cafe uses locally-sourced produce and the menu has vegan and gluten-free options. We recommend trying the Laska Lemak, a coconut soup made with Tofu and seasonal vegetables or if you’re popping in for breakfast, the homemade granola is delicious. Be warned, you’ll need to book ahead if you’re going for dinner, especially on weekends.

The Green Park Brasserie is based in what used to be the booking office of a restored Victorian Station. With an emphasis on local produce (we’re talking Hinton Estate Beef and Somerset Chickens), this is the perfect choice for foodies looking for top-notch English cuisine in splendid surroundings. The emphasis here isn’t on speed of service so, as with catching a train, leave yourself with plenty of time if you have an after-dinner arrangement.

The award winning Menu Gordon Jones in Bath focuses on creating amazing food that comes with an element of surprise. The seasonal menu is tailored to include the freshest local produce and is cooked by Michelin trained Chef Gordon Jones. The restaurant offers two surprise tasting menus that are available at both lunch and dinner. Widely regarded as one of Bath’s best restaurants, Menu Gordon Jones will truly tickle your taste buds with its exciting fare.

Breakfast is the new lunch. Don’t believe us? Just wait until you try the food at the Blue Quails Deli. The restaurant is run by husband-and-wife team Peter and Glenda Botes, who moved to Bath two years ago to retire from their careers in the hospitality business - before spotting an empty shop and deciding to open the deli. We recommend the flapjacks.

Turtle Bay is inspired by beach shacks and street hawkers in the Carribean and offers delicious and authentic dishes that are perfect to share over drinks with friends. The compact menu will leave you salivating as your struggle to decide between chilli fried squid, pulled jerk pork, saltfish patties or Jamaican fried bait – why not just order them all! Turtle Bay offers something a bit different to the usual restaurants in Bath and its laid back atmosphere and extensive cocktail menu will not leave you disappointed.
Turtle Bay, 11 Bridge St, Bath BA2 4AS
We’ll be honest; Sotto Sotto is not the place to take someone that you only want to be friends with. This gem of a restaurant is ideal if you’re trying to impress someone special - plus, it’s the perfect dining destination after a visit to Bath’s Spas, which are just a stone’s throw away. Oh, and did we mention Sotto Sotto was recently named the best Italian restaurant in Bath at the Bath Good Food Awards?
