Afternoon tea is a quintessentially British tradition: a chance to get together with friends, family or your partner to enjoy a selection of dainty little morsels all washed down with our national drink. If you want to go out for afternoon tea, you’ll want to choose the best afternoon tea in Bournemouth...but with so many choices on offer, how will you decide which one to go for? The answer’s simple: have a look through our top picks. We recommend that you work through all of them...
Beautiful Art Deco hotel The Cumberland is a stunning setting for an afternoon tea, where you can choose to dine either in their sophisticated café or their opulent lounge. Choose from a range of teas (try the green tea with echinacea and cocoa shells!), which you’ll enjoy with four dainty sandwiches, huge raisin, walnut and cinnamon scones dusted with icing sugar and served with lashings of clotted cream, and beautiful French pastries that look too good to eat...almost...

If you like your afternoon tea with a side order of vintage quirkiness, then this is the place to go. We love looking around at the nostalgic memorabilia, and dining on vintage china makes every afternoon tea at Steam feel like such a special occasion! Their offering is a bit different to the norm: you’ll still enjoy the sandwiches, scones and cakes, but we love that we’re offered honey as well as preserves and clotted cream for our scones, and the fact that the meal ends with dainty chocolates. There are gluten-free and vegan afternoon teas available too...

This family-run tearoom is well-known for its cakes...and for us, it’s these cakes that make their traditional afternoon teas so very special! Sitting on mismatched chairs in a chintzy tearoom decked out in bunting, you’ll enjoy all their fare served on beautiful tiered cake stands...or for something different, book a place on their Tea Bus where you’ll enjoy afternoon tea while being given a 90-minute tour of the Dorset coastline. We love it as a choice for hen parties and baby showers!
Frieda’s Tearoom, 7 Stafford Road, Bournemouth, BH1 1JH
An afternoon tea with a sustainable twist! Everything about The Green House Hotel is green, from locally sourced ingredients to running the company car on cooking oil from the kitchen. Their afternoon tea is a grand affair, served with a difference on a three-tiered wooden tree and with all the treats you’d expect. We love the fact that the scones are served warm straight out of the oven, and the chocolate chip variety are truly amazing....
The Green House, 4 Grove Road, Bournemouth, BH1 3AX
We honestly think that the afternoon tea at the Hotel Miramar has one of the best views in Dorset. When we’re looking through the windows at the palm trees in their garden, and across to the sea, we could almost believe we’re on holiday… Traditional and open sandwiches, warm scones, pastries, tarts, cakes, fruit...make sure you arrive hungry. Our top tip? Add a glass of Pimms or champagne for a real treat...
Hotel Miramar, East Overcliff Drive, Bournemouth, BH1 3AL
If you’re looking for an elegant afternoon tea for a special occasion, you can’t get much better than the sumptuous drawing room at the Victorian Langtry Manor Hotel. With the white linen tablecloths and beautiful setting, you’ll feel truly spoilt - and even more so when your food arrives. A great selection of sandwiches, cakes and scones and an amazing lemon posset all make for a truly memorable experience.
Langtry Manor Hotel, 26 Derby Road, East Cliff, Bournemouth, BH1 3QB
The Living Room is one of Bournemouth’s hidden gems...a vintage boutique hotel that’s also home to a smartly decorated tea room, serving traditional afternoon teas as well as a gluten-free option. Our favourite, though, is the savoury afternoon tea (which must be ordered in advance): with sourdough, smoked cheese, charcuterie, pickles, candied bacon, savoury scones (with butter and chilli jam), mini sausage roll, scotch egg and a pork pie on offer (all washed down with a mini local beer), it’s a great choice for those who don’t have a sweet tooth.
