For many, the phrase “Japanese food” will conjure up images of raw fish and rice - but there’s far more to the country’s cuisine, If you’re looking to enjoy the country’s traditional dishes at a Japanese restaurant, Bournemouth has plenty to offer: places where you can try everything from ramen (noodles in broth) to light and fluffy battered tempura veg or seafood, savoury pancakes known as okonomiyaki and more. Sound good? Here are the Japanese restaurants in Bournemouth that we thoroughly recommend...
Head to Westbourne for a trip to Miya: a beautifully custom-designed restaurant that blends a modern approach with Japanese food traditions. The open kitchen means you can watch the chefs hard at work, preparing everything from sushi and sashimi to lamb and steak dishes, tempura and salads. Our recommendations? Try the soft shell crab tempura rolls, the Japanese-style rack of lamb and the crispy duck gyoza dumplings with an incredible spicy dipping sauce…

Created in the style of a Japanese pub, the Nippon Inn is a place where we love to sit Japanese-style too, on a tatami mat on the floor beside a low table (regular tables are also available!). The relaxed atmosphere is the perfect place to enjoy everything from sushi and noodles to katsu dishes, yakitori and more: try the flavourful chicken katsu curry or the mixed platter, which features succulent yakitori chicken, Japanese meatballs and pork katsu, skewered in a breadcrumb mix. Their green tea and black sesame ice creams are well worth saving space for too...

As the name suggests, Noodle Bar’s focus is on noodles, with no fewer than eight different varieties available - including the traditional Japanese udon and ramen. We enjoy the buzz that sitting at long communal tables creates, and while the cuisine is pretty pan-Asian, there are plenty of Japanese dishes to try. Start your meal with the lightly battered tempura prawns or vegetables, which have a lovely crunch - and try topping your noodles with the delicious deep fried breaded chicken katsu - you won’t be disappointed!

Japanese soul food is what Katsu Bar on Lansdowne Road is all about - and it’s very tasty indeed! It’s a restaurant that’s beautifully designed in a contemporary style, with stunning hand-painted murals that create a lovely environment in which to eat. Menu-wise, there’s a strong focus on katsu - breaded and fried meat, fish or tofu, served in a huge number of different ways. We’re big fans of the tonkatsu: a breaded and fried pork loin, served with a miso tonkatsu dressing, a sweet and fruity brown sauce, rice and shredded cabbage.

If sushi’s your thing, head to Sushi & Roll on Westover Road where you’ll find some of Bournemouth’s finest. We love how this tiny restaurant makes all of its sushi to order right before your eyes, with a menu that ranges from the regular to the more exotic. As well as the sushi, you’ll find starters and sides such as edamame beans and seaweed, as well as noodle dishes. When it comes to the sushi itself, we highly recommend the large Black Tiger Rolls, packed with fresh cucumber and avocado, and a juicy crunchy fried prawn.
