Turkish food is far, far more than just kebabs - the greasy offerings from kebab vans parked up in Bournemouth at the weekends are a poor representation of what the country’s cuisine is all about. Visit a Turkish restaurant in Bournemouth and you’ll find a whole host of amazing dishes to choose from: freshly baked breads, diverse meze dishes, succulent meat cooked over a charcoal grill and the thick, strong Turkish coffee that’ll certainly give you a boost at the end of your meal! Here are the restaurants that’ll give you a true taste of the country’s fantastic cuisine...
We can’t get enough of the atmosphere at Baraca, which ranges from peaceful and relaxed to lively and buzzing, depending on whether you’re there on a regular evening or on one of their famed belly dancing nights. The variety of lanterns hanging from the ceiling give the place a homely feel, and the variety of dishes on the menu means there’s something for everyone. We love their Lamb Iskender: thinly sliced meat in a hot tomato sauce, served on sliced pitta and topped with melted butter and yoghurt. Or, if you want a bit of everything, their Sultan Meal Menu offers a meze platter, grill platter and dessert platter for tasters of different dishes.

The rustic décor and relaxed atmosphere at Le Beyti, combined with its authentic, home-cooked food, make it a great choice for anything from a quick lunch to a date night. Between them, the chefs have over 40 years of experience in the kitchen, and it shows in the food, which is packed full of flavour. We’re huge fans of their generous mixed grill, and can’t visit without ending our meal with their baklava, which is all made in-house and perfect for those with a sweet tooth!

When a Turkish restaurant’s full of Turkish diners, you know you’re onto a winner - and that’s certainly been the case whenever we’ve visited Saray. Don’t expect any frills: it’s a good, honest place that focuses on its food, where we love to sit facing the open kitchen, watching the chefs hard at work. The menu’s extensive, with set meals for two or four if you’re finding it hard to choose - or try our recommendation of the Patlican Kebabi: minced meat and aubergine grilled over charcoal for an amazing smokey flavour. Don’t leave without trying their fantastic baklava for dessert...

Ali Baba is a place to enjoy a friendly, informal meal and service with a smile, with authentic Turkish specialities cooked over charcoal for a seriously amazing flavour. Turkish tea is on the house, and if you’re after one of their specialities, it has to be a kebab. Served with a choice of rice or chips and a side salad, the lamb shish is our favourite. It’s also our choice of restaurant for a great introduction to lahmacun: Turkish pizzas topped with minced meat, vegetables and herbs, packed full of flavour!
