In the last ten years, the number of vegans in the UK has risen by over 360% - and we’re seeing more and more restaurants catering to vegan diets too. There’s an ever-increasing number of vegan restaurants in Bournemouth - cafés too - along with many venues that cater for meat-eaters, vegetarians and vegans alike. If you’re looking for fantastic vegan food in the Bournemouth area, our round-up of our favourite venues should help you to make your pick...
We love vegan lounge Mad Cucumber on The Triangle: it’s bright and bohemian in its décor, it’s friendly and welcoming, and it’s a place that’s not afraid to experiment. Enjoy their popular scrambled tofu for breakfast, try their patties of the day (served with rice and salad), and be sure to save room for cake: their creations are not only beautiful, but amazingly tasty too.
Mad Cucumber, 7 The Triangle, Bournemouth, BH2 5RY
This contemporary bar and restaurant has a massive focus on locally sourced food, and we love their focus on catering to alternative diets. As well as a separate gluten-free menu, there’s a separate vegan menu too: tempt your taste buds with a starter of breaded baby sweetcorn or chilli, potato and lentil cakes; followed by a spicy mushroom and chickpea burger with vegan cheese or a hazelnut and cranberry nut roast. Delicious.
The Bear Cross, 2 Magna Road, Bournemouth, BH11 9LU
A great choice for family-friendly dining, Conto Lounge is a quirky place where we could (and do) spend hours just looking at the artwork and trinkets that fill the restaurant! With enough space for 130 people there’s a buzzing atmosphere - and vegan diners will be happy to know that there’s an entire vegan menu on offer. Head in for the vegan breakfast: falafels, hash browns, baked beans, slow-roasted tomato, sautéed mushrooms, spinach, wood-roasted pepper and toast...
Conto Lounge, 418 Wimborne Road, Winton, Bournemouth, BH9 2HB
Fine dining, vegan style! Arbor in The Green House Hotel is a 2 AA Rosette restaurant, serving up amazing food created from carefully sourced ingredients. It’s a quirky, contemporary place...you won’t find a tree in the middle of every restaurant! We’re huge fans of the friendly and attentive service, and there’s plenty of choice for vegans on Arbor’s menu, such as the peanut satay tofu with lemongrass and coconut risotto and a parsnip purée...
Arbor Restaurant, 4 Grove Road, Bournemouth, BH1 3AX
Set over two floors, Mexican Ojo Rojo allows you to enjoy a lively, buzzing, casual atmosphere downstairs, or more traditional and intimate dining upstairs - the choice is yours! The menu’s all about Mexican street food, with a menu that can be enjoyed by everyone, whether gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan or a meat-eater. On the vegan front, we definitely recommend their spicy cowboy beans, and trying their vegan burrito is a must...
Ojo Rojo, 106 Commercial Road, Bournemouth, BH2 5LR
Pizzas, pies and cider are what The Stable’s all about: with its wooden bench seating and bright and airy feel, it’s a lovely relaxed place to enjoy something to eat - and we’re slowly working our way through their selection of over 80 ciders. Vegans are well catered for with their own menu of pizzas, salads and sides: try the Durdle Door pizza (many of the options are named after local connections!) with herb roasted potato and sweet potato, roast onion, spinach, tomato sauce and vegan cheese.
The Stable, Westover Road, Bournemouth, BH1 2BU
If you love a vintage afternoon tea - served on bone china and accompanied by memorabilia from times gone by - then Steam’s the place to be. Normally afternoon tea’s a no-go for vegans, but we’re seriously impressed with their vegan sandwiches, scones (with coconut cream instead of clotted cream) and beautiful homemade cakes, all served in quirky surroundings.
Steam Vintage Tea Rooms, 47 Poole Hill, Bournemouth, BH2 5PW
