More and more of us are opting for vegetarian meals, whether we’re completely vegetarian or just fancy a non-meaty evening. Finding a vegetarian restaurant in Bournemouth is easy: as well as venues whose menus are 100% meat-free, there are also plenty of others that go to the effort to make sure their veggie customers are completely satisfied. Want some ideas? Here are our six top picks...
Restaurant Roots is all about fine dining - relaxed and unpretentious fine dining, that is. It’s a restaurant whose menus are inspired by nature, and whose dishes are seriously beautifully presented too. There’s no a la carte option here: instead choose either the 5 course or 7 course tasting menu...and there’s vegetarian versions of each. Creative food and attentive service make Restaurant Roots a very special place indeed.
Restaurant Roots, 141 Belle Vue Road, Southbourne, Bournemouth, BH6 3EN
This Lebanese and Mediterranean gem isn’t strictly vegetarian...but their mouthwatering mezze selection will keep both vegetarians and carnivores alike happy. Their Mediterranean decor, buzzing dining room and the fact that the staff treat you like a member of the family create a great atmosphere...and the food’s amazing too. Creamy fresh hummus, smoky baba ghanouj, slow cooked stuffed vine leaves...it’s just like being on holiday.
The Luxor Restaurant, 67 Charminster Road, Charminster, BH8 8UE
With its vast expanses of wood and exposed brickwork, Camden Bar Westbourne has a great relaxed vibe - and we love the lighting too, with individual bulbs all hung from the ceiling at different heights. Its menu - which includes meat dishes as well as vegetarian - takes its inspiration from across the globe, so whether you’re after a Tex Mex-style kidney bean curry or veggie fajitas, or a falafel burger heaped with tzatziki, they’ve got you covered.
Camden Bar Westbourne, 46 Seamoor Road, Westbourne, BH4 9AS
We love The Skinny Kitchen, whose aim is to offer fitness-inspired food for diners following all sorts of diets. And that includes a great selection for vegetarians! The staff always look so happy to be there...and for good reason too, when they’re serving great healthy dishes such as kale and lentil dahl with cauliflower rice, a cauliflower and quinoa burger and a falafel, beetroot and mint hummus-based pizza. Yum.
The Skinny Kitchen, 46 Seamoor Road, Westbourne, BH4 9AS
Vegan lounge Mad Cucumber has gained itself a bit of a cult following: its quirky, bohemian interior and regular experimenting with ingredients both sweet and savoury keep people coming back for both the regular menu and the specials alike. The 3 bean chilli is a winner - and the patties of the day are wonderfully filling. Save space for their vegan cakes too...
Mad Cucumber, 7 The Triangle, Bournemouth, BH2 5RY
Vegetarian food is a bit of a tradition in Lebanon - and you’ll find that over half the menu at Beirut Lounge is perfect for those who don’t eat meat. Choose their contemporary, friendly restaurant for some seriously good Middle Eastern food: the staff are always happy to make recommendations, or pick your own choices from dishes such as spinach and onion stuffed pastries, spiced garlic potatoes and vegetarian moussaka.
Beirut Lounge, 232 Old Christchurch Road, Bournemouth, BH1 1PE
Bar and restaurant The Bear Cross is known for its focus on alternative diets, with some great food choices for those who are vegetarian, vegan or gluten free (there are separate vegan and gluten free menus, in fact!) The service and atmosphere are both top notch, and the food? Well, you can choose anything from Stilton pancakes to a root vegetable terrine to a hazelnut and cranberry nut roast: you’ll be spoilt for choice.
The Bear Cross, 2 Magna Road, Bournemouth, BH11 9LU
