While we all love going out for dinner, there are times when all we want to do is curl up at home with a great meal that we’ve not had to cook. It’s at times like those when the plethora of takeaways in Edinburgh comes into play: there’s a range of cuisines on offer for all tastes and moods. Looking for a great Chinese takeaway in Edinburgh? It can be hard to know which one to pick - which is why we’ve done the hard work for you.
Right in the heart of Edinburgh’s New Town you’ll find Karen’s Unicorn, which combines authentic Cantonese cooking with top quality Scottish ingredients. Their takeaway menu (available for collection only) is varied and always delicious and piping hot. There’s a real mix of the classic Cantonese dishes and the more unusual: we recommend ordering the char sui pork with its sweet, honey-roasted flavour, and the crispy shredded chicken with a sweet and fiery honey and chilli sauce.
Karen’s Unicorn, 8B Abercromby Place, Edinburgh, EH3 6LB
Corstorphine’s Cool Jade is open seven days a week for takeaway Chinese food - and whenever we’ve collected our meals in the past, each dish has been freshly cooked and steaming hot. Portions are generous, and the quality is fantastic: for something different, try the king prawns chui chui in a sweet mandarin and soy sauce, while the deep fried squid with salt and chilli is perfectly cooked and packed full of flavour.
Cool Jade, 3/4 Downie Terrace, Corstorphine Road, Edinburgh, EH12 7AU
Sitting between Gorgie and Merchiston, Taste Good is a contemporary Chinese restaurant that also offers a takeaway and delivery service seven days a week. For us, the quality of the food and the speed of the delivery give Taste Good a worthy place on our list - as well as the size of the takeaway portions and the amount of choice on offer. The Singapore noodles are among the best we’ve found in the city, with just the right amount of heat, and the combination of tender meat and a huge amount of flavour in the chicken satay is well worth a try.
Taste Good, 69-71 Slateford Road, Edinburgh, EH11 1PA
This traditional Cantonese restaurant and takeaway in Meadowbank offers takeaway and delivery every day of the week bar Wednesday, when the restaurant is closed. Head over to collect your order and you’ll see how busy Xanadu is, which we always take as a good sign. On the menu, you’ll find all of the popular Cantonese dishes from sesame prawn toasts to special chow mein - if ordering starters, their aromatic crispy duck with pancakes and fresh plum sauce is exceptional.
Xanadu, 13-14 Dalziel Place, Edinburgh, EH7 5TP
Chinese Manor House, near the airport, has been around since 2002 - and they deliver from 5.30pm to 10pm every day, as well as offering food for collection. The quality is consistently great, and the menu includes a range of Peking, Cantonese and Szechuan dishes. The duck with lemon sauce is so good that we won’t go back to lemon chicken again - and if you get the chance to dine in, you’ll find that it’s one of the few Chinese restaurants in Edinburgh with a special children’s menu.
Chinese Manor House, 2 Glasgow Road, Edinburgh, EH12 8HL
Silver Bowl on Leith Walk may be tiny, but its food is big on flavour. Their Thai menu has some amazing choices, but it’s their Chinese dishes that we truly love. There are plenty of vegetarian and vegan options to choose from, and you can either have your meal delivered, or collect from their clean and friendly shop. It’s always hard to choose with so many dishes on the menu, but we suggest starting with the crispy spring rolls, continuing with the chicken chow mein and ending with a classic banana fritter - our guilty pleasure.
