In search of the best Mexican restaurant in Edinburgh? Search no more - here at TablePouncer, we’ve done the hard work for you...

What do you want from a Mexican restaurant in Edinburgh? Is it a place where you’re guaranteed great tacos, tortillas and a party atmosphere, or somewhere that’s more focused on the traditional street food that the country has to offer? Whatever your choice, Edinburgh has a plethora of great Mexican dining options to suit all tastes, dietary requirements and budgets...so it’s just up to you to find your favourite! To help you out, we’ve created a list of our favourites - where’s your top Mexican restaurant in Edinburgh?

Miro’s Cantina

Nestled in the heart of the lively New Town, Miro’s Cantina is a tried and tested favourite of ours - it’s been there since 1991. It’s a lively place with bold and bright decor, a great atmosphere and some seriously upbeat music - we challenge you to eat there without a smile on your face! We love the fact that they combine local produce with authentic ingredients imported directly from Mexico...and this quality shows in their food. The nachos and the slow-cooked lamb main are highlights for us - and the churros are out of this world...

Mariachi burrito Burritos bursting with flavour at Mariachi

Mariachi

A central location, a great drinks selection, a buzzing environment and fantastic food...what’s not to love? Mariachi is a family-run Mexican cantina with an atmosphere that screams fun. There’s plenty of choice on the menu for vegetarians, and we’re grateful for the heat ratings that the team have added to their menus, with dishes ranging from very mild to extra hot such as the El Diablo burger, whose sauce packs a real punch! You’ll find all the old favourites - tacos, enchiladas, fajitas and more - as well as more traditional Mexican dishes, and a drinks menu that includes some great Mexican beers and agave tequilas.

Viva Mexico

Viva Mexico, in the Old Town, is another of Edinburgh’s longstanding favourites - it opened way back in 1984. Since then, it’s been serving up truly authentic Mexican dishes: as it’s run by a Mexican family, you know that you’re getting a true taste of Latin America. The restaurant itself is packed full of colour, as is the menu, which includes plenty of dishes you’ll not find elsewhere in Edinburgh. We love the texture and flavours of the Baja fish burrito - and if you’re a fajita fan, try Viva Mexico’s offering: they’re praised by many as being the best in Edinburgh...

El Cartel tacos Tasty tacos at El Cartel

El Cartel

El Cartel has a very different feel to it than many of Edinburgh’s other Mexican restaurants: instead of bold, bright colours, walk through the door and you’re faced with more of a street food shack feel with corrugated metal, dark walls and rustic-looking tiles. There’s no reservations here: walk in if you can, or add your name to the list of people waiting to enjoy their take on Mexican street food. The menu’s full of tacos and other small dishes that are great for sharing - our favourite is the guacamole national, topped with spring onion, pomegranate and sheep milk cheese - delicious! Their frozen margaritas are insanely good too.

Blue Parrot Cantina

Dining at the Blue Parrot Cantina in Stockbridge, tucked away below street level, feels like visiting a friend’s house - it’s that informal and relaxed. It’s a quirky place that’s only open on Friday and Saturday evenings, so we definitely recommend booking, and we love its rustic feel. The chefs can be seen hard at work in the open plan kitchen, preparing everything from scratch and focusing on flavour rather than heat. The favourites are all there, from burritos to enchiladas, along with a great mixed cured fish ceviche, and some moreish boozy desserts...

Blue Parrot Cantina, 49 St Stephen Street, Edinburgh, EH3 5AH

Bodega

This dedicated taqueria just north of the New Town is a little different to our other choices on this list. It opened in 2013, and it’s all about tacos: beautiful gluten-free corn tortillas, stuffed with a range of fillings. Why so different? Well, while there are Mexican flavours on offer (such as a beautifully rich and tender slow cooked carne asada steak), they also include flavours from all over the globe: think jerk pork, tempura vegetables or seafood, and buffalo chicken, among others. Save space for their churros - Mexican doughnuts with a smooth chocolate sauce - post-tacos...

Bodega, 62 Elm Row, Edinburgh, EH7 4AQ
